At a time when the world is facing multiple crises at once, Malta must continue to be a voice for peace, dialogue and respect for international law. This was the central message conveyed by Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Chris Fearne during a series of high-level meetings in New York on the occasion of the United Nations General Assembly.
International crises do not remain confined to where they begin. Conflict and instability can affect trade, energy, transport and prices, with a direct impact on people’s daily lives. Against this backdrop, Malta continued to emphasise throughout the week the importance of international cooperation in addressing challenges that no country can face alone.
Maritime security was among the key issues discussed. During a ministerial meeting on the subject, Minister Fearne stressed the importance of the United Nations Charter and international law, as well as stronger cooperation to safeguard freedom and security of navigation and critical infrastructure. He also highlighted Malta’s contribution through the Global Centre for Maritime Sanctions Monitoring in Valletta.
“What happens beyond our shores does not stay there. Conflict and instability affect trade, energy and prices, and ultimately the lives of our families. For Malta, dialogue, international law and cooperation are therefore not simply principles, but practical tools to protect peace, security and our country’s interests,” Minister Fearne said.
Peace in the Middle East was also high on the agenda. Minister Fearne participated in the High-Level Ministerial Meeting of the Global Alliance for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, where Malta reiterated its support for a negotiated two-State solution and for concrete steps that can help create the conditions for lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis.
Discussions in New York also focused on the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence. Malta joined the AI Opportunity Statement, a United States-led initiative promoting international cooperation on AI, with a focus on innovation, investment and secure and trusted AI ecosystems. The event was also attended by Jacob Helberg, United States Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs.
The week also delivered concrete steps in Malta’s international relations. Diplomatic relations with Zimbabwe were formally established, while an agreement with Thailand will provide for regular political consultations and further dialogue between the two countries.
Minister Fearne also held meetings with his counterparts from Algeria, Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, Libya, Armenia and Egypt, as well as representatives of UN Women and the League of Arab States. Discussions covered bilateral relations and regional and international developments of common interest.
Throughout the week in New York, Malta continued to strengthen its relations with countries and international partners while advancing its position in favour of dialogue, respect for international law and practical solutions to shared challenges. In an increasingly complex international environment, Malta will continue working to build trust, bring different perspectives closer together, and contribute to greater peace and stability.
